Sunrise over mountains in Afganistan on the way into Kuwait.

  • Sunrise over mountains in Afganistan on the way into Kuwait.
  • A reminder of why we won't be relocating the family to Kuwait (ok not the only reason). I can not explain how shockingly dangerous it is to drive over here. The speeds are very high, traffic rules are not followed or enforced, and serious accidents are frequent.
  • A typical Kuwaiti shop street. This one is near the Crowne Plaza where I spent my first night.
  • Mosque, also in the Crowne Plaza neighborhood.
  • Everything seems to be under construction here. And those buildings that aren't probably should be.
  • Ok this one is funny. This is a BP station! Notice the waiting area - the couch on the sidewalk. Although this one is a bit more quaint than is typical, this is how car service gets done here - just pull up to the nearest shack that has a Kuwait Oil or BP sign.
  • Here is the Crowne Plaza where I spent my first night. This is a beautiful (as long as you are on the inside, that is) 5 star hotel with the best fitness center I have ever seen. I was a bit nervous when I first arrived and saw the blast wall in front. Fortuntately this is atypical. This is the only building I have seen with such measures. Kuwait seems to be a very safe place to live, with little concern about terrorism and very low crime. It is probably safer than good old Springfield, VA.
  • This is the view from my apartment window. This is the gulf, known here as the Arabian Gulf. The beach looks pretty nice at high tide, but as you will see later, she is not so pretty at low tide.
  • Also from my apartment window, Arabian Gulf street. This street follows the coast through all of Kuwait City. My apartment is in the suburb of Salmiya just outside of Kuwait City.
  • Another apartment view shot with the full moon.
  • Sunrise over the Gulf. It is nice that I get this view just about every day. The weather doesn't change much here. Its pretty much hot and sunny every day. My kind of weather.
  • This the famous Kuwait Towers (ok probably only famous here). There are three towers, one of which has an obervation deck (haven't done that yet). In addtion to being a tourist draw, these are also water towers, holding water as emergency supply. At least that's what they tell the tourists.
  • Another angle..
  • I like this less common perspective on the towers.
  • Ok enough, this is getting tedious.
  • One of my first trips out into the country was down to the Saudi border and back. It's only about 60 miles or so from Kuwait City down to the souther Kuwait border with Saudi Arabia. I explored the coast a bit on the way back. I saw this mosque near the resort town of Kiran.
  • This is what water towers look like here. Fascinating...
  • I didn't know they had a resort.
  • Ok this is a bit strange. A tent with couches in the middle of the desert. I know there are nomads - bedouin - that live in the Kuwait desert, but I don't think this is one of their settlements.
  • This is what passes for a 7-11 in the Kuwait desert. This truck shop was in the middle of the desert near the Saudi border. I can't imagine they have more than a few passers by in a day. That is a rough way to make a living.
